A practical MCP workflow
Compare country indicators with AI and World Bank MCP
Connect ToolCargo World Bank Indicators to your MCP client, choose one of its five supported indicators and compare two to eight countries for the same year. Keep the indicator definition, units and missing values beside the result before asking your agent to interpret differences.
Built for: Researchers, agencies and analysts preparing a source-linked country comparison or annual trend brief.
What to connect
Create a ToolCargo account and use OAuth or an API key with a supported MCP client. Hosted connectors share your plan’s call quota; connect each required MCP endpoint separately. Review provider permissions before starting.
Run the workflow
1. Choose the question and indicator
Use population for total population; gdp_usd for GDP in current US dollars; gdp_per_capita_usd for GDP per person in current US dollars; inflation_pct for annual consumer-price inflation; or internet_users_pct for individuals using the Internet as a percentage of population. These five keys are the full ToolCargo selection. Total GDP, GDP per person and real GDP growth answer different questions; a change in current-dollar GDP is not a measure of real growth.
2. Fix the countries and comparison year
Call compare_countries with two to eight distinct country codes, one indicator and one year from 1960 through the current year. Use the same year for every country instead of silently comparing each country’s latest available observation. Annual publication can lag, so a recent year may have gaps. Choose another explicit year if needed and record that choice.
3. Preserve the returned result and its gaps
Keep the country names, year, indicator label and returned values. The connector formats numbers to at most two decimal places. A not reported entry is missing data, not zero. For a single-country trend, country_trend accepts start and end spanning at most 31 years; it omits missing years, so do not assume the sequence is complete.
4. Verify definitions before writing the brief
Open the World Bank indicator metadata and dated source query separately. Record the upstream indicator code, unit, retrieval date and any caveat that affects your comparison. These links and dates are your evidence ledger; the connector returns a generic World Bank source note rather than a full metadata record. GDP in current US dollars is not adjusted for inflation or purchasing-power differences.
5. Explain the comparison within its scope
Ask the agent for a short table and explanation grounded in the reported figures. Keep observations separate from hypotheses about why countries differ. Recheck the same query before sharing or updating a report because values can be revised. Use a separate data source when your question needs an unsupported indicator, a forecast or a live feed.
A prompt to try
Use ToolCargo World Bank Indicators to compare EG, SA and AE on internet_users_pct for 2023. Show each country, the common year, reported value and percent-of-population unit. Keep not reported values explicit; do not fill them with zero or a different year. Give me the exact indicator code and a World Bank source query to verify separately. Note rounding, retrieval date and publication limits. Do not infer current adoption, broadband quality or causes from this one annual indicator.
What a useful result looks like
A useful comparison ledger contains country → indicator/code → year → value or not reported → units → source query → retrieval date → caveat. A trend adds the requested year range and identifies gaps through source review. Preserve the tool’s rounded output and avoid presenting it as the upstream record’s full numeric precision.
Know the limits
ToolCargo provides two tools and five curated annual indicators, not the whole World Bank catalogue. No external provider account or API key is needed, but hosted calls require a ToolCargo account and scoped key or OAuth and consume the shared plan allowance. The tools return text, not a downloadable dataset or generated chart. Source figures may arrive late or be revised; comparisons do not establish causation, forecasts or real-time conditions.

}- Indicator and common year
- IT.NET.USER.ZS — Individuals using the Internet (% of population), 2023.
- Egypt, Arab Rep.
- 74.01% in the connector’s rounded output; the checked upstream value was 74.01190186.
- Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates
- Both returned 100 for 2023 in this checked source query.
- What was checked
- The public World Bank API response and ToolCargo’s implemented lookup formatter, separately from authenticated hosted MCP execution.
This is a dated source and lookup-formatting example, not a forecast or a claim about current conditions. A reported 100 does not establish broadband quality or that every person is connected today. Re-run the same year/indicator query before reuse and review the provider’s definition; do not manufacture missing observations.
Common questions
Can I request any World Bank indicator?
ToolCargo currently supports only population, gdp_usd, gdp_per_capita_usd, inflation_pct and internet_users_pct. It does not search the entire indicator catalogue. Review the tool reference before planning a broader analysis.
Why does a recent year show not reported?
Annual data can be unavailable or published later for a country and series. Keep the missing entry and verify the source query. If you select an earlier year, use that same explicit year across the comparison and record the change.
Do I need a World Bank API key?
No provider key is required for these public data queries. ToolCargo’s hosted MCP endpoint still requires its own account, scoped key or OAuth. Each successful lookup uses one shared-plan call; check the pricing page for current limits.
Is this the World Bank’s official Data360 MCP server?
No. This is ToolCargo’s independently hosted connector using the World Bank Indicators API. The World Bank publishes a separate Data360 MCP project with its own platform, tools and documentation.
