Wikimedia Commons Media Research — tool reference

Find image candidates. Inspect creator credits, dimensions and recorded license terms.

Server URL: https://toolcargo.com/mcp/commons · Scope: connector:commons. Activate Site Audit free and connect with ToolCargo OAuth or a scoped API key. No Wikimedia account or provider key. Each successful operation uses one shared-plan call, including cached results.

commons_search_images

input
{ "query": "أهرامات الجيزة", "language": "ar", "limit": 5, "offset": 0 }

Use a human phrase of 2–200 characters. ToolCargo quotes it as a literal phrase and restricts the source search to bitmap File namespace records. Results identify canonical File titles, page IDs, source links and description-page edit timestamps. Search ranking describes text matches; the image has not been visually inspected. Quoted phrase matching can be narrower than the Commons website’s default search.

Pass nextOffset with unchanged query, language and limit for another explicit page. Limit 1–10, offset 0–1000. Source continuation is validated; no automatic paging or completeness claim. Indexed hit counts and ordering can change. Arabic queries work against available source text, with no complete Arabic catalogue guarantee.

commons_file_metadata

input
{ "fileTitle": "File:All Gizah Pyramids.jpg", "language": "en" }

Inspect one exact File title returned by search. The canonical identity and an explicit normalization flag are returned; redirects and interwiki targets are not silently followed. Dimensions, MIME, media type and bytes describe the current file. Upload/version time and SHA1 remain separate from the description page’s revision. Historical-file continuation is ignored: no older file version is fetched. Current metadata is not an atomic immutable snapshot. Files outside supported image MIME/media types are marked explicitly.

Recorded description, creator, credit, custom attribution, original creation date, permission, restrictions and license terms are projected as inert plain text with field provenance. HTML is never executed. Creator may include several people or later modifiers and may differ from uploader. Creation dates can be prose; they are not coerced into precise dates. Requested English or Arabic display does not prove every field is translated.

Attribution-required and copyrighted values retain their source strings with true, false or unknown selection. Missing license URLs and source fields stay missing; they do not become permissive defaults. Text is capped at 1,000 characters per field, with truncation flags. At most five unique HTTP(S) links per field are returned with omission/count signals. These pointers and the validated original-media URL are untrusted data and are never followed.

Review the recorded license before reuse

Wikimedia Commons is a community-edited source. Machine-readable license fields can be unreliable for multi-licensed files. A Commons listing, public-domain label or absent restrictions does not establish copyright clearance or freedom from personality, trademark or other restrictions. ToolCargo does not select a definitive license or produce a legally verified credit line. Inspect the source description and applicable license before reuse.

Provider and freshness

Wikimedia Commons supplies the metadata and the Wikimedia Foundation operates its public API. Source identity appears in every result. ToolCargo does not sublicense the upstream API or guarantee its availability.

Only fixed-origin public JSON requests are made, with identifying support contact, maxlag=5, shared in-flight control and spacing, a 15-second timeout and 2 MB response cap. Provider-directed cooldown is preserved. Errors are not automatically retried. No credentials, account cookies, downloads, thumbnails, arbitrary URLs, edits or linked pages. Commons receives the query, title, language and page parameters; ToolCargo credentials are not forwarded.

Bounded projected metadata can be cached for five minutes in a single running instance, up to fifty entries of 50 KB each. fetchedAt and cacheHit expose observation time and caching; this is not a durable archive or source snapshot guarantee.
