A practical MCP workflow
Find life-sciences publications with Europe PMC and MCP
Connect ToolCargo Europe PMC, search a topic within a defined year range, then inspect each selected record by its source and ID. Keep the source links and publication types in your reading list, and read the original papers before drawing conclusions.
Built for: Researchers, students and writers preparing a life-sciences literature starting point.
What to connect
Create a ToolCargo account and use OAuth or an API key with a supported MCP client. Hosted connectors share your plan’s call quota; connect each required MCP endpoint separately. Review provider permissions before starting.
Run the workflow
1. Define the question and time window
Use a specific topic or phrase and optional publication-year bounds. Treat this as a starting search; varying terminology and incomplete indexing can affect coverage.
2. Inspect the candidate records
Run europe_pmc_search_publications and keep each returned source and ID. Follow the cursor when more results are needed. The search returns publication metadata and does not fetch abstracts or full papers.
3. Read the selected metadata
Use europe_pmc_publication_details with the returned source and ID. Preserve available publication types, first-publication dates, DOI and open-access flags. An open-access flag alone is not a license.
4. Evaluate the original evidence
Follow the Europe PMC links, read original papers and related notices, and review methods and context. Preprints, retractions and other notices require attention; metadata flags may be incomplete. The connector does not assess study quality or provide medical advice.
A prompt to try
Find Europe PMC publication records about protein structure prediction published from 2021 to 2023. Inspect selected records using their source and ID. Return a reading list with titles, publication dates, identifiers, publication types and source links. Keep missing fields explicit and distinguish metadata from conclusions about the evidence.
What a useful result looks like
A reading-list entry should keep the publication title, source and ID, available DOI, publication date and types, and its Europe PMC link. Add review notes only when supported by the returned fields or by your reading of the original paper.
Know the limits
Bounded publication metadata only. No abstracts, full-text downloads, systematic-review coverage guarantee, evidence grading or treatment recommendations. Publication types and notices can be incomplete. ToolCargo shared call limits and Europe PMC availability apply.
Common questions
Does this search return full papers?
No. These tools return publication metadata. Follow the source links to investigate article access and reuse terms.
Can I use the results as a systematic review?
The connector can help find candidate records, but a systematic review needs a documented search strategy, broader source coverage and independent screening.
Do I need a Europe PMC API key?
No provider key is needed. ToolCargo hosted calls require ToolCargo authentication and share the Site Audit allowance.
