ToolCargo

A practical MCP workflow

Research ECB reference exchange rates with AI and MCP

Use supported_currencies before latest_rates. ToolCargo reads the ECB’s direct daily XML feed, retains its original per-euro decimals and publication date, and derives selected cross-rates and optional conversion amounts. ECB source data are freely available on the ECB website.

Built for: Agents preparing dated informational currency comparisons.

What to connect

Create a ToolCargo account and use OAuth or an API key with a supported MCP client. Hosted connectors share your plan’s call quota; connect each required MCP endpoint separately. Review provider permissions before starting.

Run the workflow

  1. 1. Check current published currencies

Call supported_currencies. Coverage comes from the fetched daily feed plus implicit EUR=1; do not assume every ISO currency is published. SAR and AED are not promised.

  2. 2. Select the base and quotes

Call latest_rates with one to twelve unique quote symbols. EUR is the default base. To convert an amount, provide amount and quote together; quote is included even if it is outside symbols.

  3. 3. Keep source and derived figures distinct

Retain the publication date, retrieval time and original per-euro decimal strings. ToolCargo derives each quote as its ECB per-euro rate divided by the base currency’s per-euro rate, and rounds converted amounts to four decimal places.

  4. 4. Label informational reference rates

Cite the European Central Bank and identify ToolCargo’s modifications. ECB data are freely available; any ToolCargo fee covers hosted access, not purchase of ECB data. These working-day rates are informational and transaction use is strongly discouraged by the ECB.

A prompt to try

Use ToolCargo supported_currencies to check the ECB daily feed, then latest_rates with base EUR, symbols USD and GBP, amount 1150 and quote USD. Show the publication date, retrieval time and original per-euro decimals beside the derived conversion. Attribute the ECB and disclose the freely available source and ToolCargo modifications. Treat the result as an informational reference, not a transaction or tax rate.

What a useful result looks like

Current currency coverage → source publication date → original per-euro decimals → selected derived cross-rates → optional rounded conversion → attribution and use context.

Know the limits

Only currently published ECB daily currencies. No intraday feed, historical-rate query, guaranteed exchange execution or ZATCA determination. Holidays can leave an earlier publication date and rates can be amended. Each successful list or quote uses one shared-plan call with a fresh bounded fixed-source fetch.

Common questions

Can I convert SAR or AED?

Those currencies are not promised by this ECB connector. Check supported_currencies; unsupported currency requests return a clear error.

Why check publicationDate separately from fetchedAt?

publicationDate belongs to the ECB reference feed; fetchedAt records ToolCargo’s retrieval time. A fresh fetch can contain the previous working day’s data.

Are these bank or transaction quotes?

No. They are informational ECB reference rates, whose transaction use the ECB strongly discourages.
