A practical MCP workflow
Research U.S. Treasury debt records with AI and MCP
Connect your agent to ToolCargo’s Treasury MCP. Read a bounded reported-debt series, then compare two exact source publication dates while preserving original amounts, missing components and source links.
Built for: Research agents preparing source-linked U.S. debt-history comparisons.
What to connect
Create a ToolCargo account and use OAuth or an API key with a supported MCP client. Hosted connectors share your plan’s call quota; connect each required MCP endpoint separately. Review provider permissions before starting.
Run the workflow
1. Choose an explicit history window
Request one to thirty-one inclusive calendar days from 2005-04-04 through today UTC. Retain only the source records actually returned and list gaps without inventing a reason.
2. Read the original dollar amounts
Preserve total public debt outstanding, debt held by the public and intragovernmental holdings as decimal USD strings. Missing values remain missing and are not replaced by zeros.
3. Compare exact publication dates
Use treasury_debt_compare with two ordered dates. Keep the source records and separate retrieval times alongside exact decimal differences. If a date or component is missing, the corresponding difference cannot be calculated.
4. Keep stock and flow separate
A change in outstanding debt is not the budget deficit or gross borrowing. The source describes publication dates and previous-business-day data; do not invent a real-time as-of instant or claim an immutable historical vintage.
A prompt to try
Use ToolCargo Treasury to inspect debt records from 2026-09-28 through 2026-10-02, then compare publication dates 2026-09-28 and 2026-10-01. Preserve exact decimal USD amounts, missing records and components, retrieval times and source links. Label calculated differences and keep them separate from budget deficits or borrowing.
What a useful result looks like
A bounded source-record table and two-date comparison with exact dollar strings, explicit gaps and labelled ToolCargo calculations.
Know the limits
Debt to the Penny only. No budget statements, arbitrary fiscal datasets, automatic paging, nearest-date substitution, annualization or debt-to-GDP. Records are mutable; source update timestamps and immutable revision identifiers are unavailable. Comparisons fetch two source records sequentially, not atomically.
Common questions
Is this a real-time national debt clock?
No. Source publication dates remain intact, with the previous-business-day data caveat. Retrieval time does not establish an economic as-of instant.
Can I treat the change as the budget deficit?
No. These are outstanding debt stocks; budget flows and gross borrowing are different measures.
Are the original Treasury data paid?
No. Treasury offers the underlying public data freely. ToolCargo plan fees concern hosted access and processing.
