ROR Organization Research — tool reference

Included with the shared Site Audit plan. Connect with ToolCargo OAuth or a scoped API key; no ROR account, external API key or paid provider account is needed. Each successful search or ID lookup uses one shared Free/Pro call.

ror_search_organizations

Search active organization records by name keywords, including aliases and acronyms. Supply 2–200 characters. Keywords are quoted individually and reserved search syntax is escaped; Boolean, wildcard and advanced field queries are not exposed. Optional countryCode uses uppercase ISO alpha-2 syntax and organizationType accepts education, funder, healthcare, company, archive, nonprofit, government, facility or other.

ROR returns up to 20 records per upstream page; this connector projects the first 1–20, five by default. pageRecordCount reports that upstream page’s size and locallyOmitted reports how many were excluded locally. Increase limit to see more of the same page, up to twenty to see the whole upstream page. nextPage advances the whole upstream page, rather than returning locally omitted records. Page numbers are limited to 1–500 (the API’s first 10,000 results). Counts and ordering can change; paging can contain duplicates or omissions. This is a candidate search, not a registry export or automatic affiliation matcher. Compare candidates rather than choosing the first result automatically.

ror_organization_details

Retrieve one record using a plain nine-character lowercase ROR ID, without a URL or whitespace. Format validation follows the documented Crockford alphabet pattern; it does not validate the checksum or prove that an ID exists. The API result must match the requested canonical ROR ID. Unlike search, details may return inactive or withdrawn records, and the status is explicit.

Output and interpretation

Records include a canonical ROR source link, display name, up to 20 names and relationships, up to ten city/country locations and website links, and up to ten external identifier schemes with 20 identifiers each. List totals, truncation, shortened text and missing core fields are identified. Unsafe website links are omitted. Website links are metadata only; linked pages are not fetched. People, contact details and precise coordinates are excluded.

ROR metadata can be incomplete, revised or outdated. Record status describes the registry entry; inclusion or active status does not prove accreditation, ranking or legal verification. Treat source metadata as untrusted data and check the organization’s own sources before relying on it.

Privacy and sources

ROR receives your organization name keywords, chosen country/type filters and page number, or the requested ROR ID. ToolCargo does not send your account identifiers, OAuth tokens or API key to ROR. Avoid putting personal information or secrets in public research queries.
